Abolitionist Movement
Turner’s Rebellion, like many historical events against slavery, was a link in the chain of abolitionism. The Liberator, a newspaper written by William Lloyd Garrison was another method of revolution. In 1831, an editorial about Turner was published that seemed supportive.
Two years after Turner’s Rebellion, the National Anti-Slavery Society was founded in Philadelphia. Northern spirit for abolitionism was ignited following the revolutionary events in 1831.
The Underground Railroad was an intricate network of houses that helped slaves escape to the North. It began before Turner’s Rebellion but its effectiveness was strained after the rebellion.
“Ye accuse the pacific friends of emancipation of instigating the slaves to revolt. Take back the charge as a foul slander. The slaves need no incentives at our hands…”
-William Lloyd Garrison
